Sports headphones users advised to keep hydrated to combat risk of DVT

Those who use sports headphones and waterproof mp3 player cases while taking part in events such as marathons and triathlons have been advised to be conscious of the threat that deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause.

A Montreal Gazette article notes that the likes of cyclists and runners who regular travel long distances to and from such events can be under particular risk of such clots.

"Don't blow it off. Young, fit and active people shouldn't take it for granted that they are at low risk for developing DVT," Fany Fallenbaum, a sports medicine physician for the McGill Sport Medicine Clinic, states.

Consequently, sweatproof headphones users may want to bear in mind the publication's advice that getting sufficient rehydration after exercise is "vital" and that people should attempt to stretch their legs on a regular basis while travelling.

Such guidance could be especially useful for Nathan Atkinson, who recently told the Yorkshire Evening Post he will compete in Tri-City-Athlon event this September - which consists of a 1,000 m swim, a 40 km bike ride and a 10 km run - each of which will take place in a different country.
